SENATORS DUMPED IN TEN INNINGS, 2-1
Whitney ends it with walk-off double
The Harrisburg Senators and Akron Aeros played a pitcher’s duel Saturday at Canal Park in Akron, following a pair of offensive slugfests. In the end, Matt Whitney, who spent most of Spring Training with the Nationals, ripped a walk-off double down the right-field line in the 10th inning to plate the winning run in a close play at the plate. It gave Akron a 2-1 win. The starting pitchers commanded the game early, with Akron’s David Huff going hitless into the fourth inning. After a one-out walk to Justin Maxwell, Luis Jimenez rolled a slow grounder up the third-base line. Huff fielded and his throw to first was wide, allowing Maxwell to score all the way from first to make it 1-0 Senators. Meanwhile, Harrisburg’s Shairon Martis gave up single hits in all six innings he pitched, but didn’t allow a run. He struck out a pair and didn’t walk a batter. The Aeros pulled even in the bottom of the seventh. Just after Armando Camacaro was caught stealing, Brandon Chaves drilled a solo home run to right off reliever Josh Perrault to tie the game at 1-1. The Aeros won in the 10th when Michael Aubrey reached on an error on a comebacker to the mound. Whitney, who spent most of Spring Training in Nationals’ camp, ripped a double into the right-field corner to chase Aubrey home from first. The throw from right was just late, and Aubrey slid in feet-first with the winning run. Randy Newsom got the win in relief for his first decision of the year. Jim Ed Warden took the loss to drop to 2-1. The Senators are 14-8 and the Aeros improved to 8-13. The teams play Sunday at 2:05 PM in Akron.
